Over the past five years, geopolitical conflicts have twice triggered major increases in energy prices across Europe, exposing the EU’s dependence on fossil fuels and the vulnerability of its energy system.
According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the recent conflict in Iran is costing the European Union around €500 million per day. Rising oil and gas prices continue to impact households and businesses throughout Europe.
For the European Commission, the answer is increasingly clear: producing more renewable energy at home.
This vision is outlined in the recently published AccelerateEU communication, which aims to accelerate the clean energy transition, strengthen Europe’s energy resilience and reduce dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets. One of the central pillars of the strategy is the development of more “homegrown energy” produced directly within European territories.
Local authorities are expected to play a crucial role in this transformation. Cities, towns and villages across Europe can help build a more sustainable energy system through renewable energy projects, energy communities, self-consumption initiatives and partnerships with local citizens and businesses.
According to the Commission, Europe’s energy transition will therefore be built not only at national level, but also from the ground up through local communities and municipalities.
