In the first quarter of 2026, renewable energy sources accounted for 45.5% of the electricity generated in the European Union, up from 42.7% in the same period of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wind remained the largest renewable electricity source, accounting for 44.9% of total renewable electricity generation, compared with 42.3% a year earlier. It was followed by hydropower (28.0%), solar energy (17.3%), combustible renewable fuels (9.4%), and geothermal and other renewable sources (0.4%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among EU Member States, Denmark recorded the highest share of electricity generated from renewable sources (90.0%), driven mainly by wind power. Portugal ranked second with 82.9%, largely thanks to hydropower, while Lithuania came third with 75.7%, also relying primarily on wind energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lowest shares were recorded in Czechia (12.7%), Malta (13.0%), and Slovakia (17.2%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
