{"id":61830,"date":"2025-05-23T09:58:03","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T07:58:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kyotoclub.org\/?p=61830"},"modified":"2025-05-26T10:01:33","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T08:01:33","slug":"strong-public-support-for-green-investments-and-help-for-low-income-households-new-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kyotoclub.org\/en\/news-en\/news-from-the-world\/2025\/05\/23\/strong-public-support-for-green-investments-and-help-for-low-income-households-new-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Strong Public Support for Green Investments and Help for Low-Income Households, New Study Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new Europe-wide study reveals overwhelming public support for greater government investment in sustainable energy, building renovations, and targeted aid to low-income households\u2014despite signs the EU may be pulling back on climate funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conducted by 89up, the research used political scenario testing to assess how different policy narratives influence public attitudes toward climate action and government responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key findings:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>65%<\/strong> of Europeans agree that investing in sustainable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels is essential for Europe\u2019s security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>67%<\/strong> think governments must do more to tackle climate change, even if that requires <strong>spending more public money<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>71%<\/strong> support government action to replace outdated heating systems and reduce volatile energy bills\u2014even if it means higher government investment. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Widespread support for ETS2 pricing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only <strong>27%<\/strong> of respondents believe that polluting fuels (like oil and gas) should <strong>not<\/strong> cost more than clean energy. The rest agree they should cost more, either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For everyone (28%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the wealthy only (27%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Based on income levels (26%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although far-right voters are significantly more skeptical\u2014<strong>38%<\/strong> oppose higher prices for dirty fuels\u2014support is otherwise consistent across political groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Compensation: Focus on Cutting Bills<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked how ETS2-related compensation should be used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>48%<\/strong> want it focused on <strong>lowering electricity bills<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>24%<\/strong> prefer <strong>lower income taxes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only <strong>15-21%<\/strong> support general cash transfers or support for adopting clean technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Top Priority: Direct Grants for Low-Income Households<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked where the EU should direct its climate-related financial support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>40%<\/strong> chose <strong>direct grants for low-income households<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>30%<\/strong> backed <strong>low- or zero-interest loans<\/strong> for home renovations (for households able to repay).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>21%<\/strong> supported <strong>funding public buildings<\/strong> like hospitals and schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings signal a clear public mandate: Europeans want climate policies that are ambitious, fair, and focused on affordability\u2014especially for the most vulnerable.
