{"id":51787,"date":"2024-02-02T17:22:11","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T16:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kyotoclub.org\/?p=51787"},"modified":"2024-02-12T17:23:06","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T16:23:06","slug":"eu-agrees-new-law-granting-consumers-a-right-to-repair-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kyotoclub.org\/en\/news-en\/news-from-the-world\/2024\/02\/02\/eu-agrees-new-law-granting-consumers-a-right-to-repair-products\/","title":{"rendered":"EU agrees new law granting consumers a \u2018right to repair\u2019 products"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2023, the European Commission proposed a new law equipping consumers with a right to have their devices repaired \u2013 long after the warranty expired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith the agreement reached today, Europe makes a clear choice for repair instead of disposal,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2024\/02\/02\/circular-economy-council-and-parliament-strike-provisional-deal-on-the-right-to-repair-directive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Alexia Bertrand, the Belgian consumer protection state secretary, who led the negotiations on behalf of EU countries. Parliament and EU countries still need to rubber-stamp the agreement \u2013 usually a formality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">European Parliament\u2019s lead negotiator, the German centre-left politician Ren\u00e9 Repasi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20240129IPR17216\/deal-on-strengthening-consumers-right-to-repair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cIn the future, it will be easier and cheaper to repair products instead of buying new, expensive ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside other initiatives, establishing a right to repair was high on the agenda for the EU\u2019s hemicycle. Behind closed doors, lawmakers hope that tangible positive impacts for consumers will endear them to the European public.
