{"id":40366,"date":"2022-03-28T12:36:34","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T10:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kyotoclub.org\/?p=40366"},"modified":"2022-03-28T12:56:55","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T10:56:55","slug":"decarbonising-heating-and-cooling-the-time-variable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kyotoclub.org\/en\/news-en\/news-from-the-world\/2022\/03\/28\/decarbonising-heating-and-cooling-the-time-variable\/","title":{"rendered":"Decarbonising heating and cooling: the time variable"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fossil fuels used for heating and cooling are responsible for 12% of the total EU CO2-equivalent emissions and for 28% of the yearly EU energy consumption. Furthermore, as shown by the latest figures released by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coolproducts.eu\/coolproducts-reports\/out-of-gas-eu-is-e70-billion-away-from-making-renewable-heating-affordable-for-all\/\">Coolproducts campaign<\/a>, only about 17.3% of the heating appliances installed in European homes are powered by electricity or use clean technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The EU Copernicus Climate Change Service has demonstrated&nbsp;<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/how-close-are-we-reaching-global-warming-15degc\">how close we are<\/a><\/em><em>&nbsp;to reaching a global warming of 1.5\u00b0C, foreseen now for February 2034<strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;In&nbsp;<\/em>the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/\">IPCC Climate Change 2021: the Physical Science Basis<\/a>&nbsp;report, it is noted that while strong and sustained reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases would limit climate change, it could take 20-30 years to see global temperatures stabilise. Even with a carbon-neutral planet in 2050, global temperatures would stabilise no earlier than 2070.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technologies to replace gas, oil and coal boilers have been there for years, manufacturers&nbsp;are ready and consumers are in favour of the switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Energy Agency\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/net-zero-by-2050\">\u2018Net-Zero by 2050\u2019<\/a>&nbsp;argues that if the world is to achieve net-zero emissions by the middle of this century, no new fossil fuel boilers should be sold from 2025 onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EU decisionmakers should include this ban in forthcoming EU legislation.
