In general, the upfront cost of installing a heat pump is much higher than a gas boiler, but heat pumps are three times more energy efficient. After some years, the upfront cost of a new heat pump can be offset by savings on energy bills \u2013 but significant investment is needed at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To measure the affordability of switching to heat pumps and solar thermal, we must look at the period needed to cover their upfront cost through the savings on energy bills, which is known as the \u201cpayback time\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the existing incentives and prices, an average middle-income family of four members will only find a reasonable payback time (8 years or less) when switching from a fossil fuel boiler to a heat pump in&nbsp;<strong>Italy, Portugal, Spain, Finland, Cyprus, Malta, Austria<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>France.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply put,&nbsp;<strong>19 out of 27 EU countries either don\u2019t allocate enough subsidies<\/strong>&nbsp;for families to overcome the upfront price of renewable heating solutions&nbsp;<strong>or have disproportionate tax regimes on electricity<\/strong>. A lack of public support is hampering the uptake of heat pumps and solar thermal in Europe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, solving this problem would be more feasible than ever for EU governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make heat pumps affordable for everyone, member states must increase subsidies by at least\u00a0<strong>\u20ac70 billion<\/strong>, an<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>extra mile that could be reduced to<strong>\u00a0\u20ac20 billion if a CO2 tax of 100 \u20ac\/ton<\/strong>\u00a0was introduced. Such are the estimations of the latest study carried out by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) on behalf of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coolproducts.eu\/coolproducts-reports\/out-of-gas-eu-is-e70-billion-away-from-making-renewable-heating-affordable-for-all\/\">Coolproducts <\/a>campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only about 17.3% of the heating appliances installed in European homes are powered by electricity or use clean technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time is running out to push gas out of a sector that is responsible for\u00a0<strong>12% of the EU\u2019s total CO2 emissions<\/strong>, equivalent to the emissions of all the cars in the EU, and\u00a0<strong>28% of the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>EU\u2019s annual energy consumption.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coolproducts.eu\/coolproducts-reports\/out-of-gas-eu-is-e70-billion-away-from-making-renewable-heating-affordable-for-all\/\">More information<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To enable consumers to overcome the upfront cost for switching to clean heating, EU governments will need to increase subsidies by \u20ac70 billion, a new Coolproducts study reveals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":42,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"kc_post_selected_socio_id":0,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[25,26],"tags":[87],"class_list":["post-37422","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-en","category-news-from-the-world","tag-news-progetto-decarb-eerei"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
